Online Role Playing Games
I have always loved playing role playing games since I was very young. Recently, Online Role Playing Games have made the genre quite popular, but it was not always this way. Back in the day, if you played Dungeons & Dragons you were instantly labeled as a total geek. People would not even talk to you - that is, except your Dungeons & Dragons friends. Nowadays, there are tens of thousands of people who play online adventure role playing games, but aback in the day they would be played by a small group of five or so gathering once a week in someone's basement.
Online role playing games definitely have a lot going for them that normal, old-fashioned ones did not. First of all, in an online role playing game you do not need a dungeon Master. When you are playing Dungeons & Dragons, you need someone to tell you the story as you go along. With online role playing games, however, the computer takes care of this. The other great thing about online role playing games is that many people can play at once. Massively multiplayer online role playing games, or MMORPG's as they are called, can have thousands of players at any given time. This also means that you do not have to meet at a certain time and a certain place. You can play an online role playing game whenever you want!
Unfortunately, there are a lot of drawbacks to this. One of the great things about traditional role playing games is that they are a chance for adults or teenagers to get together and play make-believe. You have a chance to socialize while taking on creative roles in an imaginary universe. It can be a great way to spend an evening in - much like playing cards or monopoly. Online role playing games, however, are a largely solitary activity. Even though there are lots of other people playing at the same time, you do not come into contact with any of them personally. There is no pressure to stay in character, and the game is mostly geared towards combat. With online role playing games, the only point is to accrue as much treasure and get as many experience points as possible. Staying in character, coming up with creative problem-solving, or having fun with friends count for nothing. It is almost as if online role playing games take the fun out of role-playing.
