You can't do this without a credit card, of course, but it will save you from being late on a payment you may have forgotten about, or a bill that may have gotten lost in the mail. The problem with these is that you should not do them with just anyone. If you don't know a person or a company, you should never give them the keys to your bank account. They don't have to have your permission to take out what they want if they have your account and routing number. They just do it. My friend learned this the hard way when dealing with a collection agency. They were not honest with her when they set up payments to be made by checks by phone. The amount of money they took each month was correct, but they neglected to tell her that the payments would go on indefinitely because she was only paying enough to cover the interest. It was a hassle for her to stop the checks by phone, and she ended up having to close her bank account to get them to stop. They weren't honest, and she paid for it. She has never done it again. If you are dealing with a company that you have been dealing with for a long time, like your phone provider or your electric company, you are pretty safe doing checks by phone with them. They will usually just do the one check and the amount will match what you ask them to take out. There are some companies though, that will take advantage of you. When you do checks by phone with them, they have your information, and if you are late on a payment, they may take out what they want without warning you first. This can lead to a lot of problems and a lot of bounced check fees. If someone calls you on the phone with an offer for a credit card or perhaps asking for money for a charity, do not allow them to talk you into doing checks by phone. Some of these are dishonest people, and they are only looking to get into your account and clean you out. You may have a hard time stopping them. I know this because it happened to me once, but I can guarantee it will never happen to me again. I refuse to do checks by phone with anyone that I do not know and have not had a good relationship with in the past. |
