Black Coffee Table
There are many choices available to people to decorate their homes. Most people want to create a comfortable space to live in. This is accomplished for some people by surrounding themselves with items that are special or meaningful to them; items that they have colleted through travel or things that they have inherited during their journey through life. Others like to create their surroundings based on decorating ideas that they see in magazines or home shows. For me the most comfortable settings are created when the articles have personal meaning to them.
My daughter-in-law was raised in a troubled family. They did not have a great deal of money and her parents spent most of what they had on alcohol. She is a person that thinks that the more you spend on items the better they are. She found a Black Coffee Table similar to one that she had seen in a popular magazine. She bought the table and wanted to use it as a focus in their living room. This would have been fine if the black coffee table would have gone with their other items, but it did not. My son came to our house very frustrated that his new wife wanted to replace many of their living room items to create a modern space, featuring the black coffee table.
My husband and I try to avoid taking sides in our children's marital issues. We have accepted our two daughter-in-laws and our son-in-law as members of our family. We told our son that he needed to work things out with his wife without involving us; however the opportunity to get involved in the situation presented itself when our daughter-in-law asked me to go shopping with her to pick out new things for the living room.
I went to their house to go shopping with her. She showed me the black coffee table and explained that she wanted to buy black and white furniture to compliment it. Their home is fifty years old and features warm oak woodwork as well as wood floors. I pointed out to her that he look she was trying to create did not match the style or date of their home. We looked through some of the magazines that she saves and found a living room that was more suited to their house style. After some talking and shopping she agreed that she could create a warm living room space without making a great deal of expensive purchases. She is learning to create a living space that fits their budget and tastes rather than those of celebrities.
